Free Space Optics Links

Get a Fast, Reliable, Point-to-Point Wireless Link at a Fraction of the Cost of Cable.

Campus networks, private company networks and redundancy links all benefit from the quick deployment of free space optics wireless (also known as FSO or laser links), plus these systems can deliver bandwidth anywhere from 2Mbps up to 1.25Gbps, over distances of up to 5km.

With leased line costs showing no sign of letting up, using technologies from leading manufacturers MRV and Lightpointe, AIT can provide you a reliable free space optics solution at a fraction of the cost of cabling.

A short-haul 100Mb laser link can cost as little as £3,500 fully installed.

Free Space Optics transmits data using modulated laser light in a way similar to fibre optic communications. This allows ultra-high speed wireless transmission at full wire-line data rates. In addition, the narrow and invisible laser beam makes it the most secure means of wireless communication.

Free Space Optics Applications & Benefits:

  • High-speed building-to-building connectivity
  • Ideal for LAN extension in campus environments
  • Offers massive savings in comparison to leased lines
  • Cost-effective way of providing backup to existing mission critical links
  • Distances up to 6km, speeds up to 10Gbps
  • Highly secure plus Interference and license free
  • Eye and skin safe, meeting IEC60825-1 Class 1M standard

Dual Path Technology

If your links are mission critical, you may wish to consider using a radio back up to an optical link to ensure high availability.

Free space optics links deliver very high bandwidth connections but can occasionally be affected by very adverse weather conditions such as dense fog. Dual Path Technology offers an optical link with RF back-up and a switch to manage the connection. In foggy conditions, if the optical link deteriorates, the switch changes the link to radio until conditions improve, then back to optical when conditions return to normal, thus preventing downtime.
